Aston Anti-Bullying Campaign

ASTON ANTI BULLYING CAMPAIGN

Vision

To eradicate and curb bullying in Aston Comprehensive School through confidential drop-in advice sessions. Through one-to-one talks, group discussions and confidence building exercises we hope to raise young peoples self-esteem.

Why I created AAB

I had the idea for AAB a while before I actually set it up. When I was at school I experienced bullying quite badly, it was not only verbal, but also physical. I was beaten up on the way home from school once by a group of lads who bullied me. The bullying started when I was about 14 year old, but before that I was a very confident, bright pupil who was very popular within my year group. I was bullied because I put some weight on, and so the group of lads thought they would make my life hell.
The bullying I experienced affected me really badly, and it still does now to an extent, with regards to my confidence and lack of self- esteem. I set this up because I don’t want children to have the bad experiences I had. No child deserves that. Bullying can ruin a child’s potential and self-esteem, but hopefully AAB can try and soften the blow. When I experienced bullying there was no one at school I could really talk to. If you talk to teachers you are seen by others as a “grass”. And I was to scared to talk to my parents. So I thought, why not talk to someone who is a little bit older, and who has experienced bullying first hand, and has overcame it relatively unscathed.

About Me

My name is Scott, and I am 20 years old. I am just completed studying for my A-Levels at Aston Comprehensive Sixth Form and I am going to University to study Nutrient, Health and Lifestyle with the view to become a physiotherapist.
Within school I am the year 12 and 13 representative for the student council, and the chairman for their anti-bullying action group.
I also volunteer at Aston Youth Club on a Monday night, where I am working towards a part-time OCN qualification in Youth Work. I really enjoy working at the youth club, and I want to introduce my anti-bullying work within the group.
Through my voluntary work I have been nominated for the Regional Millennium Volunteer of the Year award.  I work part-time at a clothes shop called River Island at Meadowhall, which I actually really enjoy!
I also play ice hockey for a team in Sheffield, called the Ice Tigers. I love playing hockey and it is the real passion in my life.
